Why is this the most important tip? Having your license not only answers many questions but also helps you avoid headaches while on the water or on vacation. If you were born after January 1, 1988, you’re required to have a boating license to operate a jet ski in Florida. Not having one can lead to fines or even court dates—something you definitely don’t want during a vacation! Even if you were born before this date, it’s crucial to know the navigational rules. Florida waters are busy, and missing markers like manatee zones, channel markers, or no-wake zones can lead to serious consequences or accidents.
Riding in Florida’s waterways is different from cruising around a lake. You’ll encounter much more than just the occasional pontoon. Be prepared for cruise ships, container ships, construction barges, kayakers, wildlife, and more. Other factors like thick seaweed patches, floating debris, and shifting sandbars are also common hazards. Both the operator and any passengers should stay alert and pay attention to their surroundings.
One common mistake riders make is looking down at the controls when they need to act fast. For example, when you need to slow down, some riders glance down at the dashboard or search for the reverse trigger. This distracts from the water ahead. Remember, your hands and fingers control the watercraft—keeping your eyes on your path is essential for a smooth ride.
Engaging your hips and legs while riding makes maneuvering your jet ski easier and reduces fatigue in your arms and shoulders. This simple adjustment can help you ride longer and with more control.
It’s easy to forget how much sun exposure you get when you’re out having fun. Be sure to apply sunscreen, and if possible, wear long-sleeve tops and bottoms for added protection.
No matter how much boating experience you have, it is always a good idea for every boater and its passengers to know boating rules before you leave the dock for your trip. Below are common boater safety tips:
